Whilst poking around on nVidia's website, for work-related reasons, I
stumbled across a downloadable collection of completely free textures.
They're in dds format (that's a DirectX format), for use in games, but I
converted them to targas and used them in POV! :)
So, anyway, these images are just a simple test of these textures. In most
of the renders I've used the same texture for the image_map and bump_map,
which works well on some textures but not on others. The finish settings are
my own, but they only took a couple of tries to get something looking really
natural, when normally it would take me hours to get the right effect.
Anyway, I thought you folks might find these textures useful. I know I'll be
using them in my work! The texture set is available from nvidia's website,
here: http://developer.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=IO_TTVol_01

Could you supply a copy of this utility to convert their format?
I've never heard of .dds, and PSP hasn't either.

You can download it from here:
http://developer.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=ps_texture_compression_plugin
If you download the Photoshop plug-in, it can be used with Paint Shop Pro.
Just put it in the plug-ins directory of PSP.
FYI, dds stands for Direct Draw Surface, which is to do with Microsoft's
DirectX.

Nog, got that, figured out why it wasn't working; I was missing one of
the dlls. O.o
I find the having to click 'yes' at each image that has a MIP map to be
terribly annoying, especially when I want to to a batch process and
convert the lot to TGA...plus the plugin GPFs after a while due to...
memory consumption? likely...
Some interesting textures though. The aerial views in particular are
incredible; they're seamless!

Yeah that pop-up message is annoying, but I think the textures are worth the
hassle :)

AWESOME!
Nice try. We can tell you really took a photograph of a 5 mile diameter ball
of aluminum sitting on Iowa.

A quick Google finds a set of nice small free graphics programs that
operate on DDS and a number of other uncommon image formats at
http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/graphix.htm
I've not tried them on the actual Transmogrifying Textures Vol 1 yet
(I's still thinking about that 110Mb download) but there seemed to be a
slight vertical stretch when I tried them on some other DDS files.
