This color pencils ring is made of isosurface and textured with function pattern.
I used standard wood texture from WOODS.INC. The first try was a strait pencil
(pencil512b.jpg attached. By the way, the scene source file is 421 bytes long). After
it was done I tried to
warp it to ring (I used toroidal coordinates). Then I replicated them. And at last
gave some distortion. So, You can see result (pencils.jpg).

Sincerely yours, Alex Kluchikov.

P.S. I have some renders like this. Is it appropriate to post them?

In a word, innovative, Alex. Great example of POV-Ray's isosurface and
function features.

Yes, why not? Even if they are more pencils. :-) People here only seem to
get tired of a lot (meaning several of the same thing with minor changes) of
repetition and this hasn't gotten near that yet. Not suggesting to put half
dozen or more images per posting, all of different colors for the pencils,
of course. :-D

Question: Are these images taken from screenshots of alpha transparency
renders for usage as some kind of graphics project? Or did you actually
place a grey and white checker plane as background? I was thinking the
circling pencils could be a fine graphic before I realized they might have
transparent backgrounds. I was more interested in how the pencils were made,
not the checkers.

Answer: actually, I put the checker to background while converting image to
jpeg format before posting. The original one had alpha channel, and I
thought that it's better to replace alpha channel with checker then with
some solid color (for example, gray? As for me, awfull combination.) I
planned to use this rendered image as a part of more complex work and alpha
channel was needed there.
But you don't like transparent background... Why?
As for the way scene was made, it's difficult for me to explain how I did
it, especially because English is not my native language and I feel a
little clumsy whie speaking or typing. But I can post sources. May be, in
povray.binary.sources? Would it be appropriate?

Yours sincerely, Alex Kluchikov.

I see. Okay, I thought maybe it was.

I didn't say that :-) I think you misunderstood me. I was more interested
in the pencils than background, then I began thinking about why it had
checkers behind the pencils, so wondered why.

Definitely, Alex, I'm sure a lot of people would like to see how it was
done. Especially me, I guess. Even if they don't say here. And yes,
povray.binaries.scene-files (there is no "sources" group) is okay for a
source file (*.pov, *.inc) attached to a message post. Or...
povray.text.scene-files if you only copy and paste the script into a message
body (attachments disallowed there).

Thanks for the answer!

Ok. So, look in povray.binaries.scene-files.

Well, Alex's work looks better than mine but you can find similiar experiment
a few years old. See url at http://news.povray.org/3a1e94f6%40news.povray.org

That's a shock. Almost three years ago and isosurfaces were being discussed.
Thought it had only been two years or less.

I noticed the bad English, you've gotten good at it. :-)

Thanks for posting those pov files, Alex! Maybe I can get around to seeing
it in action whenever I take time out to render it. I haven't looked yet.
