I have combined a proof-of-concept test with an opportunity for festivity.
This image uses a large number of faded light_sources with a seasonal color
twist. It rendered in about 20 minutes, which proves that UberPOV's faded light
adaptive culling is an absolute godsend (although no radiosity in this one). I
also tried it with radiosity only, but, as I suspected, the lights were too
small and had minimal effect. Raising emission and count would only result in
more noise, so I think faded lights are the best way of doing this.
As I mentioned, this is really just a test render; the light geometry is simply
glowing blobs placed anywhere that has columns. I need to model a sconce or
similar, and/or a ceiling version for enclosed areas, and be a bit more sparing
with the placement.
Anyway, this was too good a result not to share. Seasons greetings to all, and I
hope whatever festival you habitually celebrate at this time of year brings you
joy.
