There are still bugs to be fixed. However in terms of 'completeness' all
features should be actually present, if not working correctly.

Thanks, that matches my observations.
Pov created the Photons, but the effekt wasn't visible in the Scene. (The
Scene works with 3.6)

I'm new to POV so was going through the examples - I spent half an hour
trying to get "optincs.POV" to work until I realised it was due to me using
3.7Beta instead of 3.6.
Oh well...

If you are new to POV-Ray you should not even be using the beta. The beta
version is for testing, not for general use. That is what a release version
is for.

I understand that but a) I've been developing other software for years and
am used to accepting bugs in Betas - I just consider this a learning curve
and b) I have a core2duo - I just want SMP support - so I'm willing to put
up with a small waste of my time to almost halve my render time :) but yes,
you are correct- not the best idea in the world.
Either way, it's taught me a lot about the use of photons :D

Oh, yes. I know what you mean. I've the same Problem ;-). I'm using Pov 3.7
much more often than I should use a Beta. But its much faster than Pov 3.6
- thanks to +BM2 and the SMP support.
Perhaps I should call it "intensive Beta-testing". And if I get an image
without errors, there is no need to re-render it with Pov 3.6 ;-).

worryingly close to my own approach - especially with animations :D

Not so close as you may think. I create my Scenes with Pov 3.6 - so I can
see, that my scripts are correct. Only the final renders are done with Pov
3.7.
And I'm working since 8+ years with POV-Ray ;-).
