I just uploaded an image with colored spheres in the p.b.i. newsgroup:
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/thread/%3Cweb.430ee1b94bbce914726bd13c0%40news.povray.org%3E/
I decided to render this one using POV-Ray 3.7 beta 8 to and I posted the
result in the same thread. I like the more vibrant looking colors, but see
a lot of artifacts and the soft shadow is even looking worse than in the
original.
I hope you developers can use this example to improve things again.
Best regards, NumbC

In the future, please check the list of known bugs before reporting them again:
o There is an issue with media and transparency. See
<42769324$1@news.povray.org>.
o The windows editor does not always detect new files as type 'povray'.
o In many cases speed is not as good as 3.6.
o Photon support is not yet completed.
o There are some differences in the way gamma correction works.
Also, when reporting bugs, please follow the bug reporting guidelines as
outlined in the faq group.

To avoid any confusion: This is about what information to include, not
_where_ to report a bug!

Are the square & line artifacts in the image a result of these known issues?
That was my main concern, not the media and transparency or photon support.
BTW, here is the missing 'proper' bug information:
POV-Ray version: 3.7.0.beta.8.icl8.win32
OS version: Windows XP SP2 UK
PC: Intel P4 2.6Ghz, 2GB RAM

That is not the important information. Important would be a minimal scene.
But yes, what you report is known, so no need to supply any of that for
this report as it is a duplicate already :-)

Are you using assumed_gamma? If so, that's causing the difference in
brightness.
