I think it would be nice if it was mentioned in the VFAQ and perhaps also in
the docs in the gradient pattern section how to get the old style gradient.
In section "6.7.11.17 Gradient" the docs state this:
"[1] If only the range -1 to 1 was used of the old gradient, for example in
a sky_sphere, it can be replaced by the planar or marble pattern and revert
the color_map. Also rotate the pattern for other orientations than y."
These solutions are specific and do not always work for the task at hand. I
suggest to either replace it or expand it with the text below:
"You can get the old style gradient by replacing the pattern
gradient x
with the pattern
function{abs(x)}
and similar for gradient y and gradient z."
