Unix users please give this branch a test drive; for now I'm primarily 
interested in potential build errors:

Feel free to toy around with the `--with-libfreetype=DIR` and 
`--without-libfreetype` options.


Also, if someone knows what a sane minimum requirement for the FreeType 
version should be, let me know.
