Just downloaded the latest 3.7 beta in preparation to my move to a new dual
core CPU later this week. I thought I'd do some comparison tests with my
old CPU before I changed over...

I have posted the source, and both result imaged to povray.binaries.images
with the same subject line...

The source file (ssc4.pov) was posted a month or so back on
povray.binaries.images.. I am sorry I can't remember who posted it...

Both renders were done using the following options...
    +FS +Q9 +W640 +H480

My PC is an AMD Athlon2400+ with 1.5Gb memory.

First problem!
Version 3.7.0.beta16 was MUCH slower. Version 3.6.1c took 4m46s, while
Version3.7.0.beta16 took 7m43s... that's 60% more! Is there a better build
or should I be using some different options?

Second problem!
Version 3.7.0.beta16 rendered the image noticeably lighter. See post in
povray.binaries.images. I have converted both images to JPGs too keep the
filesize down.

Third problem!
Although the option +FS was specified, Version 3.7.0.beta16 output a
file with a TGA extension. The file is actually a BMP as I specified, but
with the wrong extension.

Did you check the message window for any warnings? Are you familiar with the
gamma issues (as per the release notes)?

So it does. Thanks for letting us know.

After an hour or so reading through this newsgroup I noticed that the
default value for assumed_gamma has changed... this probably explains this
problem...

Sorry for wasting everyone's electrons.

It is also mentioned in the POv-Ray warning messages and in the release
notes. I suspect you did not look at either; if you had you would have saved
yourself an hour of newsgroup reading.

It's particularly important to read the release notes since it is there that
changes such as this are documented.

OK..OK.. I ought to know better! I am after all a professional software
developer!

Many thanks for your help... I know I'm not the first and wont be the last,
but I just want to express my thanks to you and everyone else who bring
POV-Ray to us... I've been using it since V2.0 and can't think of another
bit of software that is as powerful and useful and best of all free...

Note to self: Read release notes!
