Greetings to everyone.
I herewith want to suggest for the upcoming version of POV-Ray to support as
import format the Photoshop file format ".psd". The reason why I vote for
that is, that PSD files can already contain transparency in a smooth way.
This their feature would be able to create possibilities for a number of
interesting image-based effects with textures within POV-Ray.
What do you think about it?
Alternatively or additionally, the new JPEG2000 format seems also to contain
ability for transparency, right? If so, I also would have to vote for a
support also of that file type. Still, the PSD format seems to be more
important to me.
Sincerely,
Sven Littkowski

This is not a group for feature requests, this is for beta testing. New
features are added to POV-Ray at an earlier stage, often after testing
in an unofficial version. If you want to discuss possible new features
do so in the general newsgroups (povray.general/povray.advanced-users),
in the povray.unofficial.patches group if you want to discuss concrete
modifications or in the platform specific groups for platform specific
features.
And finally concerning your actual request, neither of the formats you
suggested is suited for use in POV-Ray (for various reasons) and there
is neither need for any of them. Use the PNG format and a converter
(like ImageMagick) to convert to the format you need.
