I'm getting random crashes when there's a syntax error. Just start
povray, create a new file, write some garbage and try to render: It will
most probably crash. If it doesn't, close povray, restart it and render.
(Often if you modify the file, save and render then it will not crash,
but if you close povray, restart it and then render it will.)
  Is anyone else getting this?

Yes, I just tried it and the same thing happens. If I write some random text
and try to render, it crashes.

I think so. I'm definitely getting "random crashes" during parsing, and I
know that in at least some of those cases I had syntax errors and the
crashes stopped when I fixed them.

Thanks for the report, I have fixed this (or at least one cause of it). I
have put a file up temporarily at http://www.povray.org/beta/temp.zip so you
can test it (I will delete this in a day or so).

This seems to have fixed the problem in the scenes I was trying. It now
correctly stops at, and highlights, the syntax error instead of crashing.

Couldn't get it to crash anymore, so I suppose that took care of it.
