I can run a render and stop it midway without a problem, but once a
render is complete I get the message, "This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists,
contact the program vendor." Here are the details of the message:

I get the same message, but not on all renders.
A scene that fails will always fail, but not all scenes fail.
Will post an update if I see a pattern.

I made a completely blank file and rendered it. I got the usual black
image, but it still crashed afterward. I'll keep tweaking settings to
see what it could be....

Okay, more news about this 3.6 beta 4 weirdness....
POV-Ray 3.5 now crashes just like 3.6 beta 4. The quickres settings have
reverted to their defaults, giving me none of custom settings I created
for it.
ML-POV still renders perfectly, as far as I can see. POV-Ray 3.5 is
unusable now.

Sorry to cluster-post like this, but.....
It may be important to note that when I uninstalled 3.6 beta 4 and
rebooted my computer, the POV 3.5 icon was missing from my desktop. I
found the icon in the usual place and put it back onto my desktop. Ran
POV-Ray 3.5 and it worked fine.
I think somehow 3.6 beta 4 'took over' that desktop icon and made me
think I was using 3.5... when it's very possible I was using 3.6 beta 4!
This could explain why version 3.5 stopped working normally.

Well, are you sure you system isn't just corrupted? There is no connection
between 3.5 and 3.6 beta, so what you observe is completely unrelated and
thus caused by something else.

Same here. Even the trick i used to get beta 2 to not crash ( disabling all
messages with -ga) no longer works. :(

I will look into this. It could be some weirdness in the installer.
While the two versions do use seperate registry settings it is possible
that a bad setup file could do things to the old settings.
