W2000 1.0GHz, 256MB 3.5rc6
I don't know if this is intended or not but it would seem that setting the
Preview_Start_Size and Preview_End_Size settings in the .ini file will
override the pretrace_start and pretrace_end
settings of the radiosity block. The docs don't mention anything either
way. If this is the intended operation I would suggest adding something to
that effect to both the radiosity and mosaic preview sections of the docs.

This was already mentioned in thread

Sorry, I missed that thread. It still seems unresolved though. Should
something not be put in the docs to clarify this. Neither "5.2.2.2.4
Mosaic Preview" nor "6.11.11.2.13 Pretrace" have any links to to each
other nor does either explain which takes precedence when both are set.

I wonder if it could be solved similiar to anitialiasing with focal blur.

Sure. Keep in mind though that with aa/focal blur, focal blur set in the
scene overrides aa in the .ini because it has it's own aa therefore the aa
settings are not used. Radiosity (under current operation, AFAIK) uses the
same code as mosaic preview for its pretrace, however, the .ini settings for
mosaic override the pretrace settings set in the scene. Perhaps it could be
solved with some kind of warning, I would still prefer to have some sort of
reference added to the docs as well to clarify.

It is described in '2.6.2 Photons, Dispersion and Improved Radiosity' however
it is not clear what should have priority:
Instead of using the INI options "Preview_Start_Size" and "Preview_End_Size"
to control the radiosity pre-trace gathering step, use the keywords
pretrace_start and pretrace_end within the radiosity block inside
global_settings.
BTW: I think it is enough important to be placed in main radiosity chapter
instead of "What's new in 3.5".
