Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but the docs don't explain a lot about the
+UA switch and how the alpha output is controlled by the absence of
background. In fact I could use that feature because I remembered it being
discussed in the newsgroups, but it doesn't seem fully documented (see
5.2.2.3.1).

Yes, that's it, it's just that these are users' knowledge of what's going on
and I was wondering whether there was an "official" description of the
behaviour.

I'm not aware of any "official" description, but after re-reading the pre-
beta discussions on the matter, the mentioned articles reflect the results 
of these discussions.
