I think this depends on your definition. It's backwards in relation to
conventional raytracing and forward in relation to the real physical
effects. I'm not sure which definition is the more common one.
AFAIK Henrik Wann Jensen's papers and books do not commonly use either of
these terms, but Nathan regularly used 'backwards ray tracing' in his
texts so it's at least consistent this way.
