I get random crashes on a AMD Athlon 1.33 / W2000 SP1.
The scene works fine with my usual PIII 733 / NT4 SP6.
The first renders goes fine, then after several runs Povray crashes.
I haven't tried yet to simplify the scene to create a demo scene for this
(which could take some time) but has anyone got this problem before ?
Povray 3.5 beta 9 intel compile

Hi, Gilles. Any random crashes with earlier betas using the same scene on
the same machine? What happens if you use the optional VC++ compile?

I didn't test it with the previous betas (I just got the machine).
The VC++ compile of the beta 9 crashes too. Actually it crashed the first
time I tried to render the scene with it... Note than a perhaps related
problem is that sometimes the editor returns a "failed to write" message on
the current scene. It seems to happen after Povray is reloaded after a
crash, but not always. The file is freed again after a few minutes.
I have a simplified version of the scene that used to crash but right now it
doesn't...
BTW, the spline bug I reported on Dec 22 is also visible on the VC++ version
(I can almost make it repeatable now). I thought first that both problems
(spline and crash) were related but they are not.

Odd .. I'm using WinXP right now on an Athlon - upgraded this weekend from
Win98. So far, no crashes.
I'd be willing to try your scene to see if it's machine specific.

For Info, we got similar crashes (due to failure to write) when using
DevStudio (so totally non-PovRay related) using w2k on intel boxes. I
suspected the defrag program which was running in the background initially,
but removing that from the system did not cure the problem.. It occurred on
3 out of ten boxes with alarming regularity.
I suspect something a lot more sinister than PovRay is to blame for this
problem :)

Possible related W2K problem is that sometimes I am not allowed to delete a pov
file externally even when I have closed the file in pov. Generally, I have to
close pov before I can delete the file.
