During the "building photon map" stage I can see no CPU activity in the
Win2000 task-manager.
Maybe putting the texts into the status bar is done too often?

I get 75% CPU utilization at this point. But perhaps I have a faster graphics
sub-system (a slower one could pause the renderer for longer).

This is a very good point. When I turned the status bar off, CPU use went up
to 100% on the same scene during the photon build stage. On the whole it didn't
make a huge difference (see below) but it could do so on slower machines. I'll
make some sort of work-around for it.

I have a Geforce graphics adapter - if this is slow, what do you have?

When I minimized PovRay to the tray, the CPU usage is still on 0%

I have a GeForce 3.
Note that the common myth that a fast 3d graphics card makes a fast 2d
graphics card is just that - a myth. The GeForce may or may not be a
fast 2d card; I don't really know. It's certainly not slow, though.

Win98/SE/ME is only good for games...
