I receive a warning message under win2000 about no max_gradient set with the
following:

well, it would be easier to tell you if "Copy Pane" worked ;)

Here it is:
File: C:\Documents .... (etc.) Line:15
Warning: The maximum gradient found was 0.909, but no default max_gradient was
set.

It does (in beta 2). And in fact always did, but whether or not you could see
the copied data would depend on what program you were using to view it.

I gathered (I saw the previous discussion on this) - not that it matters now,
but I used word. I couldn't get it to paste in whichever paste option I chose...

Word would never have worked because it doesn't like to paste plain text (it will
always paste OEM text if it's pasting text at all).
