This is what my program (code name "Zorro") looks at the moment (the user
interface is preliminary): Feed it some image-background-pairs, and it
computes a backgroundless image and a mask (the third output image is
statistics: the blue-cyan parts for example mean that the highlight cannot
be reproduced exactly)

Sorry for the big download, but I didn't want to reduce the color depth so
that one can see the full detail of the input and output images.
