This group, povray.animations, is for discussion about animations, your 
question would have fit better in povray.newusers or povray.general.
Please read the messages in povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions, 
especially the one titled "Welcome To the POV-Ray News Groups". 
Actually, you should read all of them, there aren't that many, and they 
contain some important info...

As for your question...did you even glance at the manual? It starts off 
with a description of what raytracing is...look in the very beginning, 
for the sections titled "1.1  Program Description" and "1.2  What is 
Ray-Tracing?". If something in it isn't clear to you, say something 
about it in your message.
