Hi,

i need advice on creating a short (probably about 1 minute) film with
POV .

Is this possible as a small hobby project (e.g. single person,a few
days),
if yes, what non-commercial tools would you recommend.

The film would use robots and spaceships on a desert planet, and should
look at least a bit "realistic"
(e.g. not just a chrome sphere with two chrome tubes walking on a yellow
plane)

You can use POV-Ray itself. You don't necessarily need third-party
software.
Many of the POV-Ray animations in the IRTC have been made solely with
POV-Ray.

Hm, yes, i want to do the most stuff via povray scripts. I just
thought for some details (like robots walking on uneven ground,
modelling a canyon landscape) additional tools would be handy...

its these instances that mean you will have to do it all in povray, for
example you could do your walking robot in 3ds max, but how do you get the
whole animation back to povray.

uneven ground - look at trace

landscapes - rigged multifractals & ISO surfaces - there are loads in the
pbi group (you may have to reset your list)

Yes, even in a few days, of course you've thrown out
scripting, story-boarding, art design, color
coordination, character design, sound recording-design,
etc...

The only few commercial products I would recommend for
such a project would be: Paint Shop Pro, Goldwave (for
sound recording), and Moray (for mdelling assistance).

Well, that's all up to you- I prefer a more puppetish
stop-motion look myself... :o)

Good luck!
