i just got the beta and was wondering if theres a way to "replace" one of
the real spatial dimensions with an imaginary (i.e. sqrt(-1) ) dimension in
pov 3.5.

  Perhaps you should be more specific about what you mean. I don't really
know what do you mean.

for example, in advanced math one can graph functions on an x dimension
going from negative infinity to zero to infinity, against a y dimension also
going from - to + infinity, or one can graph some functions with an x from -
to + infinity and a y from "-i * infinity" to "i * infinity". where 'i' is
the square root of  negative 1.
I was wondering, pov-ray cant normally handle functions which return square
roots of negative numbers, if however there was some way to graph these as
'i's on an imaginary number axis then the problem could be avoided

IMHO such a feature would be too special to be of general interest,
in particular, because you can graph such functions by (manually)
calculating the real or imaginary part of the function.

I don't think this is currently implemented in 3.5, but I remember some
patched version had support for complex numbers in 2D-vector form
<real,imag> You could just extract the parts from the vector easily,
then plot them on the real axes.
