Hi,

Has anyone ever created a bamboo texture? I'm creating a scene in which
I use several sticks of bamboo and could use some hints and tips on the
creation of the bamboo texture.

There are a lot of different types of bamboo, a lot of them have some kind
of gradient structure (resulting in 'rings' across the length)

You could use a gradient pattern for simulating this but remember the
geometry changes similar to the texture, so you should consider putting
the plant together from different individually textured elements.

I found some pictures here :

and it looks like a macro creates several segments should work well. To
fake one stalk of bamboo, I would create a long tall cylinder along the y
axis and use a gradient y pigment, with a scallop wave, so the first parts
of the color map are the brownish segments, then the yellow or green takes
up most of the color map. Then you might want to add another texture with
another pattern that is partially to totally transparent.

Not an answer to your question, but isosurfaces seem just perfect for 
doing the geometry of bamboo stalks...the texture would be fairly simple.

Try this function in an isosurface:
sqrt(3*cos(x/5))+y^2+z^2-10}

I can't remember if it was good.. It's from a little library I have of
functions discovered by chance. It might get you started at least.
