I've done well over 2000x2000 with no problems. Why? All you need is RAM...

If you refer are referring to the problem you described several days
ago, please send me the whole scene and the relevant gif (or png or
grayscale jpeg) by e-mail, I'll see what I can do. I didn't see any
problems in the snippet of code that you posted, but it might be
somewhere else. Tis but the small pebble that doth tilt the car.

I've used a 4096x4096 height field once, but that was a TGA.

	I did it with a 1.2M tga with no problems. Source is in the
"incredible" (unbelievable?) competition section. Worked just
fine.
