I just got a Compaq Presario 2100 notebook with WindowsXP Home. I installed
Moray. When Moray boots it gets to the point where it says "Loading
OpenGL" and then it crashes and spits out an error log, from what I can
tell complaining about atioglxx.dll. The driver is from June 2003, and
from what I can find I can't get an updated driver from ATI or Compaq for
the IGP320 chipset in the notebook. Is there something I can set up for
Moray beforehand that will control how it loads OpenGL? I have a WinXP
desktop that runs Moray just fine, but I want to be able to noodle with
Moray when I'm traveling. Does anyone else out there use OpenGL and Moray
on a notebook?

Looking for a clue. I thought this notebook was a sweet deal at $849 after
rebates. Hope I was right.

That seems a bit old.... whats the version number?

There is no way to control OpenGL loading except to completely disable
it. I can tell you how to do that, but it involves registry editing.

Yes I thought the driver seemed old for a new laptop, but they are rebating
them so maybe it's been sitting around a year....anyway the driver for the
Radeon IGP 320M in this laptop is 6.14.10.6368 from 6/25/2003. I'm using
the default OpenGL settings in the ATI control panel. Also the ATI driver
utility I downloaded will not update the driver, and the ATI site suggests
that most notebook users will have to get updates from the manufacturer of
the notebook, but sadly Compaq, while having a lot of drivers for the 2100
listed, do not list and ATI drivers....ugh. QUESTION: will disabling
OpenGL kill my performance in Moray when viewing the model in camera view?
Thanks for the quick response BTW.

OK I am up for disabling OpenGL on my notebook. I updated the ATI drivers
to the latest optimized set from Omega dated 4.17.2004 and it did not fix
the app from crashing. I also tried running it in compatibility mode, to
no avail.

Well, if Compaq have graphics drivers listed for that laptop, then
that's what you need to install.....

Yes, of course. Otherwise why would we need hardware graphics cards
:-)

One thing could could also do before you disable OpenGL, is to start
Moray with the following commandline:

Moraywin -startlog

Zip and send me the MORAY.ERR file that's created in Moray's
installation folder. I'll take a look at whether I can see anything
wrong.

To force Moray to use software OpenGL, do this:

Exit Moray
Start Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SoftTronics\Moray For
Windows\Options
If not there already, create a Binary Value called ForceOpenGLSoftware
Set it to 01
Start Moray.

I have corresponded with you via email about a very similar problem on a
system with an ATI Radeon 7000 card. Moray worked before, but I had not
run it in a while and had changed cards (and manufacturers software) since.
There is no "options" key in my registry. I thought maybe you meant
"configuration" so I tried putting the binary value there. That had no
effect.

I turned all harware acceleration off via the control panel and now Moray
runs. I have various example programs that use OpenGL and they worked with
acceleration on. Maybe they aren't using the right function calls. Maybe
something is being done in hardware on the new card that was done in
software before and it isn't the same somehow.

If you follow the directions for editing the registry, just ad the folder
and the binary word to force open gl it will work. Worked great on my HP
laptop with the ati 320 graphics card.
