I have seen effects like this with over-clocked/-heated graphic cards as
well as with something as simple to fix as an ancient driver.

gfx card, driver version? does this happen with other opengl apps (windowed
or fullscreen)?

My old matrox card used to do this a lot with windowed opengl, I ended up
getting shut of the card and buying a voodoo5 - a month before 3dfx got
bought by nvidia :|
