It seems that two different streams of consciousness collided in my brain
:-)
Of course, Michael Moorcock's work is a watershed in its own right.

when I was a teenager but now his super heroes leave me cold. My latest
favourite author is Ken MacLeod.

Didn't know MacLeod. Shall keep him in mind at my next bookshop visit
(athought they tend to overexpose Fantasy, imo, and not SF). As for
Moorcock, I was more interested in books like Behold the Man or the Ice
Shooner (which would give some good renders too), but, yes, that was long
ago...

Do that, try to start with the earliest series; The Star Fraction (1995),
The Stone Canal (1996), The Cassini Division (1997), The Sky Road (1999),
if you can. Yes there is too much Fantasy for my taste and I like you using
