I finally got my bread baked properly. I used a heightfield for the cut
face, using the water mark to remove the part outside the boundary. The hard
part was getting it positioned properly. I got a better looking crust by
using a texture with two normals. Thanks to Tim Cook, Warp, and Marc
Jacquier for helping me figure out how to do that.

Yes, Steve! This is it, without any doubt. I even can smell it! Well done, and
thanks for the effort.

What I forgot to say: extraordinary how through these means we are able to learn
from each other's experience. Thanks to all the bright guys who collaborate and
make this possible!!

Thank you, Thomas. You were the one who suggested the improvements. Now when
I go back and look at my first post and compare the two, I can't believe the
difference.
I agree, it is extraordinary. In my own situation, I don't even know anyone
personally who is into 3d computer graphics of any kind, so my only source
of information is through these newsgroups and the internet.
