So .. what you want is a way to take say a group in Moray, and declare the
exact position of it to be a runtime calculated object through trace?

What if you had a plugin that would do something similar?  You could:

1) Place an item on the scene with the plugin (I guess as a 'grouped'
object)
2) Do an initial render
3) Script output by the plugin would do a trace, and output a file with the
locations of the object.
4) Those locations would be read in by the script, and the object
repositioned in the scene.

Would that do it?
