Well, since no one else is posting here, I might as well post some of my
usual mindless drivel...

Having only been POVing since August (when version 3.5 came out), I still
have much to learn. Nevertheless, I thought I'd enter the IRTC this round,
and give it a whirl...

I had NO idea how much time I'd be spending creating my scene. So far,
about 3 weeks into the competition, I've probably spent at least 50 hours on
it. I'm sure that part of the issue is that I'm just now learning how to do
splines, sky textures, height-fields, etc. But even so, I'm spending almost
as much time on my IRTC project as I'm spending at work. It hasn't left
very much time for other things (life). Worse yet, is the fact that I'm
looking at the deadline wondering if I'll have enough time to complete it!
Doh!

Judging from some of the other scenes that I've seen, both past and present,
I have to assume that many of you have also spent an equal amount of time
(or more) creating your works. I'm having fun (truly I am), but I'm
starting to feel like it's more of an addiction than a contest. Maybe all
contests are like that, though. How many marathon athletes have a "running"
addiction?

On the bright-side, it's coming along very nicely! I'm very pleased with
what I have so far. I'm also trying to grow a thicker skin, for when it
gets posted on the IRTC, since it's my first real work-of-art...

Just some thoughts. I'm wondering if others out there feel the same way,
and how you've dealt with these issues over the long-haul.

Seems like you'll start appreciating the "You know you have been
raytracing too long when ... " jokes within a few hours from now ...

I spent a tremendous amount of time on my entry for the Frozen Moment
round. Like you, I'm still learning POV-Ray (over a year now!), and I
used my entry to learn isosurfaces and radiosity. Not a speedy combination,
especially when I added some transparency! Hopefully as we produce more
work we'll develop speedy techniques and tricks, and build a set of files
we can re-use.

Along those lines, one of the best aspects of the IRTC is the source files.
I was sure to include mine, and I'd like to thank all those who included
theirs over the years. There's no point to everyone re-inventing the wheel
every time they want to produce an image; and even if it's just a technique
or method the source code provides a wonderful resource. The POV Objects
Collection at www.povworld.de/objects is also a great resource.

Of course, even if you have a good library of objects you still have to
use inspiration and hard work to put them together in an artistic way. I've
seen too many images (a lot of them at renderosity.com) where people just
take a few objects and throw them together to produce an image. I'm not
saying good art can't be created that way, it just usually isn't.

I sometimes wonder if using Maya or another pricey tool would speed the
work, but I'm not sure. Probably for animation. I'm very happy with the
quality of output from POV-Ray but I think you could get good results
from any package available today if you pour enough time into it.

I couldn't keep up the pace I set for my IRTC entry for very long and remain
healthy and sane...and employed, so I won't be entering very often.

Good luck with your entry!

Look at the good side. You still remember what life was like before
povray.

*LOL*

After this is over, I plan to take at least couple weeks off of POV-Ray.
Hopefully, I'll still remember how to live without it... hehe

Hmm... After a couple of weeks off, you'll be thinking:

    "How did I do THAT?!?!"

     And then...

"Oh yes, I did it 'my' way..." ;)
