I'd like to do something illustrating the fight against disease, specifically
AIDS. Do you think this is a fair interpretation? I don't mind being crucified
by a few voters for (ITHO) being off-topic, but what's the general consensus?

100% on-topic, IMHO.

As long as the image clearly shows some kind of fight/war.

Define clearly ;)

FYI my idea was for a shot of a typical cocktail of the drugs used by an HIV+
patient. This would (hopefully) illustrate both the individual "war" fought by
the patient against the disease, and the larger "war" fought by the medical
establishment as they create more and more sophisticated drugs to deal with this
slippery and adaptable enemy.

Is this the best idea you can come up with? While it is a noble cause
and all that I don't think it will score well compared to what others
are going to submit - 50% battle Mechs with lasers blazing in the night.

I was thinking of showing two Battle Mechs sitting at a table playing checkers :)

Someone can use that idea if they want. I won't have time to work on it
this round.

You forgot to mention that the battlemechs were piloted by scantily clad
poser models :)

Hey, that was my Fortress entry ! Anyone who does it gets sued for plagiarism ;-)
Kidding apart, the trouble with topics that lead to literal images is that less
"obvious" images are likely to be considered as off-topic, even if they are on topic
on a more abstract level.

And then some French juge will impose povray.org to implement an
A.I. that detects and prevents people from submitting images remotely
resembling images submitted by French people? No way! :-))

I think the difficulty in that case, for the authors, is to make
a less "obvious" image that is still obviously connected to the
topic.

E.g. through humor or metaphor, though it doesn't always cross
cultural gaps, as we've seen with the handful of "porcelain gods"
in the "Worship" rounds. On the other hands, when it works, it
gives the viewers a great feeling of awe. "Now, that is a brilliant
idea". This is how entrants (should) earn points on "Interpretation
of theme", I think.

To make myself clear, I'm always a bit sad when I have to read
the text description that comes with a submission to finally
understand how the author connected it to the theme.

E.g. a simple shot of several drugs on a bedtable wouldn't
probably make me think "warfare", until I read Tom's explanation.

Probably me neither - and I'm a great believer in the notion that you shouldn't
HAVE to read the accompanying text to understand the context - I'm trying to
think of some classic war photo (e.g. those US marines raising the flag) that
would lend itself to the composition.

Any suggestions?

Some ActUp "soldiers" raising a "Fight AIDS" flag on a
pharmacorp building. With a composition similar to the
famous Berlin photo of Russian soldier raising their
flags over the ruins of the Nazi empire.
