My first IRTC entry and I came 55 out of 142-- not bad really, I can live
with that. But the comments I received range from very nice to fairly rude--
Some of you may remember the painted ship on a painted ocean.. well a few
people thought that it wasn't "really" raytracing, and one person has
accused me of using a "rules loophole" which I hardly think is fair. also
some seem to feel that this sort of experimentation isn't in the "spirit" of
the competition.

Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy with my placing and just as many
people seemed to like my idea.... but what do you think of iwdad.jpg?-- Is
this sort of thing cheating?

Well, technically no...but you're image did *depend* on a large number of
image maps. So it's understandable when some people might think your
submission was "cutting it close" in the spirit of the competition.

I loved it. I wasn't judging this round on technique (too many entries to do
a proper job - I just gave everyone 10), so, as the entry didn't break any
rules, the question from my p.o.v. is irrelevant.

That said, I can understand people's (mixed) reactions. Your overall score
presumably suffered from low tech. scores (checks, yep, 8.9) so all is well.

True... it gives me a lot of faith in the judges that I was only really
punished in one category -- no evidence of this cross vote contamination
I've heard so much about :-)

Anyway you'll be pleased to hear that I've been modelling my next entry
night and day for the last fortnight with not one image map.

I'll repeat my comment.

If you used a raytracer to display oil paintings, yes I could imagine how you'd
offend some people in a raytracting contest. Yes, it would be a loophole if that
guy disqualified for a photograph had instead ray-traced his photo as a single
image map on a cube.

If however you had somehow tweaked the textures in povray to make exactly the
same thing, then you would have made a masterpiece --and-- provided worthy
offense to the "oh my it must look like a photo of a sunset or building"
bigots. You will notice that an entry much like yours placed very highly. Is
there a difference in how your two entries were put together?

I had considered entering an animation made with Bryce-created characters that
looked like cartoon or paper cutouts, and making them move in a really cool way,
like some of those 1980's MTV station id cartoons.

Personally, I think it was one of the better entries. In my opinion there
is
too much emphasis in the IRTC on technical aspects, and not enough
emphasis on artistic aspects. For me, an image succeeds if it is visually
appealing. Look at Gilles work... he uses plenty of image maps, but
no one complains about his work.

Surprised I've never seen any of those cartoons done in pov, and
surprised they don't still have them on TV, they were really good
promos.

Due to some complication my votes were marked with my old email
address, but it's been sorted out now and won't happen next round.

Actually this is not true. The validity of Giles' entry in the City
competition was questioned. There was a couple of serious protests and after
some private discussion the IRTC Admins determined that Giles did exactly what
he said and the image was legal. The two protesters were completely satisfied
with the results of the Admin's investigation.

As is most often the case, the Admins decided to keep quiet and let the voters
determine the artist's fate.

Also, the backbone of the IRTC is "Ray Tracing or Rendering" and the creation
of 3D objects. The rules can be viewed as "High and Mighty", and they are.
They are restrictive and make it hard to create an image. This is the whole
point. It forces the artist to explore his software, to come up with new ways
to create the desired effect. Image maps are OK. However, an entry composed
mostly of image maps will get a lower Tech score and this often reflects on
the other two scores, even though it shouldn't.

Regards,
Bob Franke

I think Gilles 'The Wet Bird' simply looked too good for many of us to
believe
at first. Actually, the protest over it supports my point: despite image
maps, the
image still won first place, and was probably one of the highest scoring
entries
ever.
