Can someone help me out here -- I thought 3DS was a scan line renderer, not
a raytracer? Am I wrong?
Just trying to be fair in reviewing the current entries and I am suprised by
the several 3DS submissions... but it has been a long time since I looked at
3DS and will admit that I might have missed something.
And in thinking of such questions, it would be great if those of you in the
know about the various software products could post a list of known
raytracers versus everything else -- would greatly assist me anyway
(thinking if an image is not raytraced, and is entered in the IRTC, it gets
0-0-0 from me).

3DS MAX has the ability since version 2.5 to do raytracing on as little or
as much of the scene as the scene's developer chooses. For this reason alone
it qualifies as a raytracer now though it is better know for what it is best
at and that is scanline rendering.

[1.1.9] Can I use a scan-line renderer instead of a ray tracer? How about
one that uses some other rendering technique?
Yes, all algorithms are welcome. The quality should be equivalent to modern
ray tracers, though, or your image will compare badly with the other
entries. Note--we do not consider photocopying or paint programs to be
"renderers". The image should be generated by a computer, algorithmically.
