Lots of free stuff available, if you're willing to search.

Start with www.renderosity.com and www.runtimedna.com . Both require free
registrations.A lot of the free stuff at renderosity is sub-par, but there
are a few gems.

Daz3d (www.daz3d.com has made two of it's posable human models free (Mike 3
and Vicky 3) and they've got a small free archive.
