All of the really memorable pics I have seen with Maya or 3D-Studio were
made by professionals. The winning entries of the last 3DLuvr competition
were poor in comparison to the winning entries of the last few IRTCs.
The main advantage of commercial programs is that they have tools to
accomplish certain tasks very quickly in comparison to Povray. This isn't an
overwhelming advantage partly because most IRTC entrants use models, maps,
etc. from past scenes or sources on the web, but more so due to the fact
that most amateurs are more limited by creativity and talent than by time.
Any advantage remaining for the commercial programs is I believe negated by
the open nature of the Povray "community." Pov users in general are willing
to share their tools and techniques. Any one of us can go to Gilles website
for instance and read several page tutorials about the creation of some of
his best images.
