I think there are a few minimal; not sure about with gcc with them, but
that may not be too hard.

Go to http://www.linux.org/ and look under 'distributions'

They even have one listed that fits on a 1.44 floppy! Is that minimal
enough for you?   ;-)

I'm not a linux person yet, but I have done some java-based development
on Linux before. Hey guys out there, any feedback on DLX Linux, DOS
Linux, hal91 Floppy Linux, etc.?


For cross-platform, I would perhaps have suggested Java, but I'm not
sure on your number crunching needs. (Although... Java-3D over OpenGL
looks very promising...)
